46. Mr. Driberg

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will state the total number of immigrants from Commonwealth and from foreign countries who have entered and settled permanently in the United Kingdom since the end of the Second World War, and the total number of emigrants who have left the United Kingdom and settled permanently in Commonwealth and in foreign countries during the same period.

The net total of immigrants from Commonwealth countries other than Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa since the end of the Second World War is believed to exceed 400,000. The total number of foreigners who have settled in this country during the same period is roughly estimated at 350,000. No estimate can be given in respect of the Irish Republic.

No record is kept of the numbers of persons emigrating from this country.
