HC Deb 21 February 1961 vol 635 c40W
Mr. Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will review the present franchise in the Seychelles for local elections and for elections to the Legislative Council, with a view to introducing universal suffrage.

Mr. Iain Macleod

Elections to district councils are already made on the basis of universal adult suffrage.

The franchise for elections to the Legislative Council was broadened in 1960 but, despite this, only 2,308 persons registered as voters out of an estimated total of about 11,000 eligible to register.

I am not aware of any widespread demand for a further extension of the franchise but the matter is, of course, kept under review.
