§ 24. Mr. E. Taylorasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state the total amount received by the Exchequer from inland revenue stamps for tenancy and house purchase purposes in the years 1958–59, 1959–60, and 1960–61; and whether he will now reduce the scale of duty payable by tenants and purchasers of houses back to the 1946 level.
§ Mr. BarberThe answer to the first part of the Question contains a number of figures, which I am circulating below. I have noted the suggestion in the second part of the Question, and would remind my hon. Friend that, so far as the conveyance duty on the purchase of a house is concerned, a purchase for £3,500 or less is now exempt from duty and the duty does not exceed the 1946 rate unless the consideration exceeds £5,250.
