HC Deb 18 December 1961 vol 651 c114W
76. Mr. McKay

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance, what percentage of men's earnings was represented by the 26s. retirement pension in 1948, the 57s. 6d. pension in April, 1961, and the 57s. 6d. pension in June, 1961, respectively.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The 26s. single rate of retirement pension was equivalent to 19.4 per cent. of men's average earnings as shown by the Ministry of Labour's inquiry in April 1948, and the 57s. 6d. single rate of pension introduced in April, 1961, was equivalent to 19.1 per cent. of average earnings recorded in that month, which is the latest for which the relevant figures are available.
