asked the Parliamentary Secretary for Science what was the total amount spent in 1960 on medical research into the causes of arthritis and rheumatism; and what plans he has for enlarging this research work.

As was stated to the hon. Member by my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Secretary for Health on 25th July, 1960, figures are not readily available for the total amount spent on medical research into the causes of arthritis and rheumatism. The Medical Research Council's expenditure in the financial year 1960–61 amounted to approximately £56,000. It will continue to support new investigations whenever the opportunity occurs.
