HC Deb 12 April 1961 vol 638 cc24-5W
Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will accept the final recommendations of the Council of British Shipping, that the main purpose of his Department as regards shipping should be to foster the prosperity of British shipping.

Mr. Marples

I agree with the General Council of British Shipping that with the development overseas of practices such as subsidies, flag discrimination and flags of convenience, my Department has a greatly increased rôle to play in promoting the economic interests of the British shipping industry. The statutory responsibilities of the Department, however, for marine safety and other matters remain unchanged.
