Mr. B. Harrisonasked the President of the Board of Trade what recent request he has received for a compulsory levy upon the cutlery and stainless steel flatware industry for the purpose of financing scientific research in that industry.
§ Mr. MaudlingI have received a request from the Sheffield Cutlery Manufacturers Association for a compulsory levy on the cutlery industry under Section 9 of the Industrial Organisation and Development Act, 1947, to finance scientific research on behalf of that industry. I am satisfied that there is substantial support within the industry for such a levy and I hope to lay a draft Order before the House in the course of the next month.
