24. Dame Irene Ward

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state in each year from 1948 to 1960 the cost to the Exchequer of the Income Tax relief in respect of National Insurance contributions.

Sir E. Boyle

The estimated amount of tax relief to insured persons on their own National Insurance contributions is as follows:

£ million
1952–53 34
1953–54 31
1954–55 33
1955–56 39
1956–57 43
1957–58 45
1958–59 50
1959–60 46
1960–61 48
(provisional)

Comparable estimates for the earlier years are not available.

25. Dame Irene Ward

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, for the latest convenient period, he will state the cost of reduction of insurance contributions and their relation to the individual's liability where Income Tax relief is given on National Insurance contributions, and similarly in respect of individuals who do not qualify for Income Tax relief; and if he will calculate the figures on weekly contributions.

Sir E. Boyle

I am not clear what my hon. Friend has in mind, but if she will write to me I will see if I can provide the information she wants.
