HC Deb 20 July 1960 vol 627 cc47-8W
70. Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Minister of Defence what discussions he had during his visit to the United States of America with regard to the development of the neutron bomb.

Mr. Watkinson

I am not prepared to disclose the details of the wide-ranging discussion of defence matters that took place during my recent visit to the United States. June; and what were the comparative figures for the same period in 1959.

Mr. Hay

Information for the first six months of the year is not yet available. During the period 1st January to 30th April, 1960, there were 37 fatal and 345 serious casualties on uncontrolled pedestrian crossings in Great Britain. The figures for the comparable period of 1959 were 25 and 279, respectively. Since a year ago there has been an estimated 13 per cent. increase in traffic on the roads.

Separate figures for England and Wales are not available. I have no figures of accidents (as distinct from casualties) on pedestrian crossings.
