Mr. Hector Hughesasked the Postmaster-General if he will make a detailed statement indicating the effect on the Post Office turnover and profits caused by the increases to the present higher rates for some years of letters, parcels, and telegrams and indicate when, in what circumstances, and to what extent, he estimates that he will be in a position to reduce those rates.
§ Miss PikeAs regards the second part of the Question, I would naturally be pleased to see each service viable. In present circumstances, however, I could not contemplate adding to the losses on Inland Parcels and Telegrams, nor can I overlook the considerable losses of other elements of the postal services.
In reply to the first part of the Question, the following Table gives an analysis for five years:—
