asked Her Majesty's Government what was the total amount of subsidies paid to private industry, excluding the agriculture and house-building industries, from public funds during the financial year 1958–59; and what is the estimated cost of such subsidies during the current financial year.

The total amount of subsidies paid out of public funds to private industry, excluding house-building and the agricultural and fishery industries, during the financial year 1958–59 was £1.1 million. The cost of such subsidies during the current financial year is expected to be about the same amount.
