HC Deb 21 December 1960 vol 632 c170W
Mr. Eden

asked the Minister of Labour whether, in view of the need to resist inflation, he will state the policy of Her Majesty's Government with regard to automatic implementation of the recommendations of independent tribunals appointed to adjudicate between increases in wages claimed by employees and the amounts offered by employers.

Mr. Hare

Claims for wage increases which are not settled by agreement between employers and trade unions are referred to arbitration only if both parties agree to this. In these circumstances, it is in the Government's view right that both parties should be prepared to accept arbitration awards and I am glad to say that this is in fact, the general practice.
