§ Captain Kerbyasked the Prime Minister if he is aware of the growing public demand in the United Kingdom, in view of the racial policies of the South African Nationalist Government, that the Union of South Africa be removed from its membership of the British Commonwealth of Nations; and if, at the impending Commonwealth Conference, he will consult with his other Commonwealth colleagues with a view to seeking their views in this matter.
§ The Prime MinisterNo. As I said in the House on 24th March, suggestions of this kind show little understanding of the character of the Commonwealth and of the importance of preserving it 149W as an instrument in the world. I certainly do not intend to raise this question with my Commonwealth colleagues when we meet here in May.
