HC Deb 12 April 1960 vol 621 cc120-1W
73. Mr. Donnelly

asked the Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations whether he will recommend the separation of the offices of United Kingdom High Commissioner in South Africa and United Kingdom High Commissioner of the British Protectorates of Swaziland, Bechuanaland, and Basutoland.

Mr. Grimond

asked the Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations if he will separate the dual responsibilities of the United Kingdom High Commissioner in South Africa and arrange for separate representation of the Protectorates.

Mr. Alport

No. Experience has shown that there are particular advantages in the administration of the High Commission Territories being guided and co-ordinated by a High Commissioner established in South Africa who is also closely in touch with developments in the Union of South Africa.
