HC Deb 24 November 1959 vol 614 cc18-9W
56. Mr. F. Noel-Baker

asked the Minister of Works what staff are now employed by his Department at Avebury; what are their respective duties; and to what extent he proposes to increase their number next year.

Lord John Hope

At Avebury, my Department employs a Curator and two Custodians. The Curator looks after the Museum and takes part in archaeological excavations in the area. The two custodians conduct visitors round the monument, cut the grass, keep the site tidy and attend when necessary at the Museum. I do not propose to increase this staff. In addition, a chargehand carpenter and five labourers are employed on wall repairs, site clearance and general maintenance. This labour force fluctuates according to the work in hand.
