18. Mr. A. Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what loss to the Revenue he estimates would be caused by the abolition of Purchase Tax on all items other than luxury articles; and by how much the present transfer Stamp Duty on stocks and shares would have to be increased to ensure the same revenue as that now received from Purchase Tax on household and necessitous articles.

I do not know at what point the hon. Member would draw a boundary line between the two classes of article that he is seeking to distinguish.
