asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware of the steadily deteriorating position in Malta; and if he will now take steps to meet the elected representatives of the people with a view to restoring the constitution before the position becomes worse and a situation similar to that in Cyprus develops on the Island.

I cannot accept the implication of the first part of the Question. I am, of course, in close touch with the Governor on the political situation.
