HC Deb 14 May 1959 vol 605 c178W
92. Mr. Fletcher-Cooke

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations whether he is aware that the Government of India is not permitting representatives of the British Press to interview the Dalai Lama or members of his suite; and whether he will make representations to the Government of India to rectify this situation.

Mr. Alport

As I understand the position, Mr. Nehru has explained in the Indian Parliament that the Government of India do not wish the Dalai Lama to be harassed by large numbers of people seeking interviews with him. According to my information, both Indian and foreign Press correspondents have so far failed to obtain interviews with the Dalai Lama or members of his suite in Mussoorie. There is nothing to suggest descrimination against British Press correspondents.
