Brigadier Prior-Palmer

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state the total number of Civil Service pensions in issue at the latest date for which figures are available, the average value of each pension, including any increases under the Pensions (Increase) Acts, and the number of pensions which are below this average.

Mr. Simon

On 30th September, 1958, approximately 146,500 Civil Service pensions were in payment to retired officers (that is, excluding widows and other dependants). The average pension, including increase, was £220. Between 60 and 65 per cent. of the total were below this average.

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state the total number of pensions under the Superannuation Acts in issue to widows and other dependants of deceased Civil Service pensioners at the latest date for which figures are available, the average value of each such pension, and the number of pensions which are below this average.

On 30th September, 1958, approximately 22,700 pensions were in payment to widows and other dependants of civil servants. The average pension, including increase, was £74. Between 60 and 65 per cent. of the total were below this average.
