HC Deb 17 March 1959 vol 602 c21W
Sir R. Robinson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what action has been taken by Her Majesty's Government to assist the people of Singapore in relieving the distress and the repairing of damage caused by the fire at Kampong Tiong Bahru on 13th February.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

When this fire broke out the British Army at once provided help in rescue operations. In all over a thousand homes have been destroyed and about 6,500 people have been rendered homeless. The Singapore Government have opened a fund for the relief of distress and as a token of sympathy for the victims of the disaster Her Majesty's Government are making a gift of £5,000 to it.
