HC Deb 04 March 1959 vol 601 c46W
69. Mr. Shinwell

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what representations he has received from the Chamber of Shipping on the harmful effects of discriminatory practices, excessive subsidies and the tax-free advantages of flags of convenience; and what steps he intends to take in order to protect the British shipping industry.

Mr. Hay

My right hon. Friend has received representations concerning these matters from the General Council of British Shipping. In consultation with the General Council we are taking such steps as are open to the Government, but I am sure the right hon. Member knows that these are not problems to which easy solutions offer themselves.
