§ Mr. Patrick Maitlandasked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in view of the level of unemployment in Lanarkshire, he will, in appropriate cases, authorise the building of Government-financed factories for tenants prepared to set up industry there.
§ Sir D. EcclesWe shall be prepared to consider erecting factories for leasing to firms wishing to set up or expand in North Lanarkshire, where unemployment is exceptionally high.
I do not consider that there is need to extend this form of assistance to South Lanarkshire, where unemployment is by no means as high, but this will be kept under review.
