asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will make a statement about the increased Government grant for the Royal University of Malta.

Mr. Amery

The Government of Malta have undertaken to provide the Royal University of Malta with a grant of £60,000 a year for three years, with effect from the current financial year, to replace former annual grants which in 1957–58 totalled £31,000. The triennial grant will enable the University to place its finances on a sound basis, to extend its activities and to plan ahead for a reasonable period. It will also enable it to fulfil undertakings to its staff on pay and superannuation.
