asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs how many applications for local authorities to declare smoke control areas are now being considered.

In England and Wales forty-four Smoke Control Orders submitted for confirmation await my decision. Local authorities have informed me of decisions in principle to declare a further 126 smoke control areas. I have agreed that it would be reasonable for preliminary work to proceed on eighty of these, and the remaining forty-six are still under consideration.
