HC Deb 16 February 1959 vol 600 c1W
3. Mr. Cronin

asked the Paymaster-General if, having regard to the number of pits that are being closed with consequential unemployment in the mining industry, he will give a general direction to the National Coal Board not to renew where practicable any of the opencast mining contracts which are due to expire in 1959.

Sir I. Horobin

No. When contracts have expired in any year by the extraction of the coal and the replacement of overburden, the question of renewal does not arise.
