HC Deb 09 February 1959 vol 599 cc143-4W
Mr. Knox Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement on the progress of the committee of experts in drafting a convention for the reduction of cases of multiple nationality, referred to in Recommendation 164 (1958) of the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Mr. R. Allan

The meeting of the Committee of Experts was convened for 8th January, but the report on its work has not yet reached the Committee of Ministers. Her Majesty's Government are not themselves taking part in the work of the Committee because the basic proposals which the Committee is considering are unacceptable to them. The reason for this is that the proposals conflict with the principles embodied in the changes in our nationality law made by the British Nationality Act, 1948.
