HC Deb 09 February 1959 vol 599 c154W
84. Mr. Lewis

asked the President of the Board of Trade to what extent approaches were made to Her Majesty's Government by British business interests for the completion of a financial agreement and the commencement of normal relations with Egypt, on the grounds that British industry and businessmen were losing valuable business to the Germans, Japanese and French; and whether he will make a statement.

Sir D. Eccles

The Government have not been strongly pressed in this matter by business interests, who have no doubt realised that everything possible was being done to secure a satisfactory agreement. We are fully alive to the importance for our trade of restoring normal relations with Egypt.
