HC Deb 05 February 1959 vol 599 cc118-9W
110. Mr. Idwal Jones

asked the Minister of Education the numbers of graduate, graduate equivalents and non-graduate lecturers in the teachers' training colleges of England and Wales, respectively, at the latest convenient date.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

On 31st March, 1957, 1,210 graduates and 1,036 non-graduates were employed in grant-aided training colleges in England, and 100 graduates and 58 non-graduates in such colleges in Wales. No record is kept of staff who would be regarded as graduates for salary purposes, since the Report governing the salaries of training college staff does not provide for a salary addition for them or for graduates.

114. Mr. Chetwynd

asked the Minister of Education what are his plans for expanding teachers' training colleges.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

I am at present engaged upon an expansion programme which will add 12,000 places to the colleges by September, 1962, an increase of rather more than 50 per cent.
