HC Deb 04 February 1959 vol 599 cc80-1W
155. Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Labour what factors have caused the increase in the number of unemployed persons in Sunderland from 2,558 12 months ago to 5,120.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The main factors were a shortage of orders in the shipbuilding yards, some reduction in activity in engineering and glass ware, and the increased numbers of boys and girls who left school at Christmas and had not found employment by 12th January.
