HC Deb 04 February 1959 vol 599 cc69-70W
110. Dr. Stross

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what are the existing international legal agreements, to which the United Kingdom is a signatory, governing the prohibition of the use of bacteriological or chemical warfare.

Mr. R. Allan

The existing internatonal agreements having a bearing on this matter which are in force in respect of the United Kingdom are the Geneva Protocol of 1925 and The Hague Convention of 1907.

111. Dr. Stross

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will issue invitations for a conference of the great Powers to discuss the abolition of stocks of toxins, viruses, and chemicals which might be used in warfare, and the cessation of their manufacture.

Mr. R. Allan

I agree that it would be highly desirable to eliminate this threat. If we could reach agreement on comprehensive disarmament (which means, amongst other things, the prohibition of all weapons of mass destruction) we could achieve that aim. Let us, however, first get the agreement we all want on stopping nuclear weapons test explosions under effective control and then go on from there.
