asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the minimum period of service before a probation officer is given responsibility for training new entrants to the service; and what has been the shortest period of service of any officer who has been given this responsibility.

Mr. R. A. Butler

in general an officer with less than three years' experience is not given responsibility for any part of the practical training of a probation student, but exceptionally the period may be reduced to two years where the officer is well able to meet the needs of the particular student.
