HC Deb 14 December 1959 vol 615 cc109-10W
100. Sir A. Hurd

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he has identified the type of virus and the source of infection of the outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in Gloucestershire and Leicestershire.

Mr. John Hare

Virus of the type "O" has been identified. Inquiries into the origin of the primary outbreak in Gloucestershire are not yet complete, but there are indications that it may have arisen out of the feeding of waste foodstuffs to pigs. The outbreaks in Leicestershire are secondaries resulting from the movement of pigs from Gloucestershire.
