§ 58. Mr. Peytonasked the Minister of Transport what plans he has for relieving the increasing congestion in urban areas.
§ Mr. MarplesAs I told the House in Answers to Questions on 4th November, apart from physical improvements, I shall do everything I can, in co-operation with the local authorities, to see that the street systems in urban areas are used to the best advantage through the increased application of traffic engineering methods, including the strict control of street parking.
§ 74. Mr. V. Yatesasked the Minister of Transport, in view of the increasing congestion of traffic in the big cities, including Birmingham, what steps he proposes to take to control the flow of traffic from the trunk roads and motorways to industrial and large urban areas.
§ Mr. MarplesThe problem is not so much to control the flow of traffic into urban areas as to provide for it by road improvements and by making the best use of the existing road system. A skilful use of traffic engineering methods will help us to bridge the period until the series of road improvements, some of which have already been provided, take on their full shape.
