HC Deb 09 December 1959 vol 615 cc50-1W
94. Mr. Edelman

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what assistance Her Majesty's Government have offered through the French Government to the victims of the flood disaster at Fréjus.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

Her Majesty's Government were greatly distressed by this disaster. I am sure that all Members of the House sympathise deeply with the French people.

The French Government were informed last Friday that (subject to Parliamentary approval) Her Majesty's Government wished to give £10,000 for the relief of the victims. The offer was gratefully accepted.

One of Her Majesty's ships, the aircraft carrier "Victorious", which was in the area at the time of the disaster, offered helicopters for the rescue work. In the event, these were not required. The British Red Cross sent 2,000 blankets in answer to an appeal from the French Red Cross.
