HC Deb 03 December 1959 vol 614 c159W
109. Mr. Boyden

asked the Minister of Education if he will award dependants' maintenance allowances to mature students entering upon two-year teacher-training courses in 1960; and if, in view of applications from such students now being made for admission to training colleges, he will make a statement.

110. Mr. Hornby

asked the Minister of Education if he has yet completed his consideration of an extension of the system of dependants' maintenance allowances to students training to be teachers.

112. Mr. Mulley

asked the Minister of Education if he will now make a statement about the extension of payments of dependants' allowances to students at teachers' training colleges.

Sir D. Eccles

Arrangements have now been made to extend the existing dependants' grants for mature students taking one year courses to suitably qualified students over 25 years of age who enter upon shortened courses of two years at training colleges in September, 1960. I hope the colleges will recruit a substantial number for these shortened courses next year. This will help the schools in 1962 when there will be no normal output from the general colleges.
