HC Deb 26 November 1958 vol 596 cc56-7W
Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what complaints have been made in respect of British ships passing through the Suez Canal; and what are the increased charges now imposed upon British ships compared with the position before it was nationalised by Egypt.

Mr. Neave

We are not aware of any such complaints. Tolls imposed on British and other ships using the Suez Canal have not been increased since it was nationalised. A voluntary surcharge of 3 per cent. of the transit tolls was introduced by the United Nations on the 15th September, 1958, and is being paid in respect of British ships in accordance with the announcement made by my right hon. and learned Friend the Foreign Secretary on 1st August, 1958.
