HC Deb 26 November 1958 vol 596 c39W
47. Mr. J. B. Hynd

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the growing concern in Sheffield over the increasing unemployment and short-time working in the steel and allied industries in the city; and whether he will inform the House of the latest figures available for Sheffield in both categories.

Mr. Iain Macleod

On 17th November, there were 438 unemployed people who had last worked in iron and steel manufacture and 2,003 registered as temporarily stopped from these industries. Reports from employers suggest that nearly 4,000 iron and steel workers are on short-time, losing one shift weekly. These figures represent a slight decrease since September.
