HC Deb 12 November 1958 vol 595 cc33-4W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether the London and Home Counties Traffic Advisory Committee have completed their consideration of proposals to improve road safety at the Four Wantz junction at Chipping Ongar, Essex; and with what result.

Mr. Watkinson

The London and Home Counties Traffic Advisory Committee reported to me on 22nd July its recommendations for improving safety at Four Wantz junction. As a result, the 30 m.p.h. limit has been extended to cover this junction by an Order made on 10th September. I regret that owing to an oversight the Essex County Council was not informed at the time, which resulted in a delay in the erection of the necessary signs. They are, however, being put up this week. In addition, the arms of the direction signs have been adjusted at this junction, and the larger version of the sign "Slow—Major Road Ahead" for route A.113 has been ordered.

The Essex County Council is negotiating with the Education Department of the London County Council with a view to setting back a hedge so as to improve the sight line at the south-east corner of the junction.

The whole position will be reviewed in twelve months time in order to determine in the light of experience whether traffic signals are also needed.
