§ 39. Mr. Prenticeasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, following upon the recent conclusion of the dock strike at Mombasa, he will arrange for the appointment of an independent committee of inquiry to study conditions at the port, as requested by the Dockworkers' Union.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydWith the agreement of the Dockworkers' Union and the Port Employers' Association, obtained before the strike began, steps are being taken to establish a Board of Inquiry to study working conditions in the port.
§ Mr. Brockwayasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many prisoners have been employed to do the 24W work of strikers at Mombasa Docks, Kenya; and under what powers convict labour was so employed.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydAt the height of the strike about 520 convicts were employed at Mombasa Docks, by authority of Section 62 of the Prisons Ordinance, 1948.
