HC Deb 04 November 1958 vol 594 c24W
40. Mr. Prentice

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many African miners have become unemployed as a result of the dispute between the European Mineworkers' Union and the copper mining companies in Northern Rhodesia; what compensation they have been paid; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The total number of African mineworkers laid off as a result of the dispute is 22,232. No compensation has been paid, but all African mineworkers laid off receive housing free and are being paid a daily subsistence allowance of 3s. 6d. if married and 2s. 6d. if single.
