§ 71. Mr. Dyeasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease have occurred in Norfolk in recent months; what was the origin of the disease; and what steps will be taken in the future to prevent its spread to so many farms.
§ Mr. John HareNine outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease have been confirmed in Norfolk so far this year. Of the two primaries, one was attributed to the spread of infection from the continent and the other to infection conveyed in imported meat. I am satisfied that the control measures imposed are effective but the avoidance of spread depends very much upon early reporting of suspicious symptoms. Farmers can help a great deal by keeping a sharp look-out for the first signs of the disease.
