Mr. Lewisasked the Minister of Supply what action he has taken to ensure that the expenditure of his Department during the current financial year does not exceed that of 1956–57; and what actual reductions he has made or contemplates making to ensure that the expenditure of his Department in the financial year 1958–59 is not in excess of that spent during the last two years.
§ Mr. Aubrey JonesThe expenditure in the current financial year will be substantially less than it would have been but for the changes in defence policy announced in the White Paper of last April, but it was not planned to be less than in 1956–57. As to the second part of the Question, I would ask the hon. Member to await the presentation of the Ministry's Estimates for 1958–59.
