246W
§ Mr. ProfumoThe Assembly of the United Nations was asked to vote on a resolution on Algeria which "recognised the right of the Algerian people to independence" and urged negotiations between the "two parties". The resolution received 35 favourable votes, 18 against; and there were 28 abstentions. It therefore failed to obtain the necessary two-thirds majority.
The United Kingdom delegation voted against the resolution.
I will place the text of the resolution in the Library of the House when it is available and I am sending the hon. Member an analysis of the voting.
