HC Deb 15 December 1958 vol 597 c153W
94. Mr. Mayhew

asked the Minister of Health, as representing the Lord President of the Council, what research is in progress into the relationship between urban living and neurosis.

Mr. Walker-Smith

The distribution of different personality characteristics is being studied in an urban community. Other work is in progress on the attitude of individuals in towns and in the country to chronic ill-health. The causes of mental breakdown in patients from a new town and of neuroticism in medical and surgical out-patients attending an urban hospital are also being studied.

These researches are in progress at the Medical Research Council's Neuropsychiatric Research Unit in Cardiff, the Council's Social Psychiatry Research Unit collaborating with the Pneumoconiosis Research Unit, and the Council's Clinical Psychiatry Research Unit.
