§ Mr. Patrick Maitlandasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware of a local demand for the provision of social amenities for the new town of East Kilbride, notably for a swimming pool, a community centre, a cinema and a dance hall; and what help the Government are prepared to give toward the provision of these things.
§ Mr. MaclayI understand that there is a demand for further social amenities at East Kilbride. Some such amenities would appropriately be provided by the local authorities concerned, possibly in co-operation with local voluntary associations, with the assistance of Exchequer grant available for such purposes. Other amenities are more appropriate for private enterprise. The Development Corporation can suitably take the initiative in seeking the provision of amenities, and the possibility of financial participation by the Corporation where necessary is not ruled Out.
