54. Mr. Harold Davies

asked the Prime Minister if he will recommend the appointment of a Royal Commission to inquire into and report on the influence of automation and the electronics industry on the pattern of British economy, the siting of industry, and the future of employment, so that the social consequences of these new productive methods may be met with understanding in the transition period.

The Prime Minister

The effect of automation on employment has been under consideration by the National Joint Advisory Council of the Ministry of Labour, representing the British Employers' Confederation, the Trades Union Congress and the Boards of the Nationalised Industries. I do not think a Royal Commission on the subject is called for.
