HC Deb 04 December 1958 vol 596 c173W
Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many British and African officers, respectively, are now serving in Her Majesty's Overseas Civil Service in Nyasaland; which of these have had experience of service in other British Colonies; and what steps he is taking to overcome the shortage of civil servants and difficulties in the administration of Nyasaland.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The number of officers of Her Majesty's Overseas Service is 528, of whom about 100 have had experience in other British Overseas Territories. Her Majesty's Overseas Civil Service is mainly composed of overseas pensionable officers, but I will write to the hon. and learned Member if on inquiry I find that there are any Africans included in this figure. As to vacancies, only 16 notified to me remain unfilled.
