HC Deb 23 April 1958 vol 586 cc73-4W
54. Mr. Moyle

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty what assistance is being given by the Government to the development of the sea transport cargo by submersible means in view of the possibility of higher speeds, greater scope for automatic control and greater safety from aerial attack.

Mr. T. G. D. Galbraith

I understand that some industrial concerns in this country and elsewhere are interesting themselves in this possibility. My Committee, however, which is studying the problem of getting nuclear propulsion into a merchant ship, is concentrating at present on application to a surface ship which, in my view, is more susceptible of early achievement.
