Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether African secondary schools in Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland receive a grant for library books; and what was the amount of these grants last year.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd,

pursuant to the reply of his hon. Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary [OFFICIAL REPORT, 13th March, 1958; Vol. 584, c. 70], supplied the following further information:

(a) Northern Rhodesia: The following grants were made in the financial year 1956–57:

(b) Nyasaland: The following grants were made in 1957:

(ii) From African Development and Welfare Fund*

Mtendere Junior Secondary School 50

* Financed mainly out of the Agricultural Production and Marketing Board surplus.
