HC Deb 03 April 1958 vol 585 cc207-8W
Captain Kerby

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty, in view of the age of the present submarine fleet, how many full commissions, without major repairs, have been carried out by the submarine fleet in the last four years.

Mr. Allan

Of the submarines in commission at the moment the age of only one exceeds three-quarters of its useful life; and half of them have been modernised or converted. Some of the 39 commissions of two years, that were completed by H.M. "Submarines" during the last four years, have been interrupted by mishaps or defects, to which all ships are liable, but none was so serious as to entail terminating its commission.
